Cupcakes, Sandwiches, and Beer!

A rare Saturday off + a sunny Melbourne winter day + nothing to do = a trip into the city to wonder the streets and eat some food :) Sous-Jeff and I actually really love just wondering around and stopping in at random places we find on the way for a bite to eat, with no aims for the day in particular other than just having a good day out and spending some time together!

Because don’t live super close to the city and car parking is ridiculously expensive, we always catch the train into the city, getting off at Flinders St Station. Tradition now stipulates that upon disembarking from the train at Flinders St, grab a mini Pie Face each, and 2 Little Cupcakes each. I’ve blogged a fair bit about Little Cupcakes (see some beautiful cakes and read all about them here & here, and also as the inspiration for one of the recipes in my cook book!). This day’s offerings brought carrot cake and brownie for Sous-Jeff, and lamington and red velvet for me. YUMMMMM, as always :)

Ok, once that was done, we could get on with the day! We wondered along aimlessly for a while, and peeked up a few alleys, got a few random bits to eat on the way… then we stumbled on Somerset Place, where we ended up at The Little Mule Cycle Co.

This unassuming little hole in the wall is home to a custom bike shop, as well as a little cafe focused on serving good, honest, home-style meals. It’s a cosy, little environment, with communal style seating and a whole lotta bike stuff!

I just felt like a little something, and Sous-Jeff had a sandwich craving, so we were at the perfect place! We consulted the menu and placed our orders (sandwich-wise, you can choose from a toastie, a melt or a baguette), and waiting 10 minutes or so for them to come out.

Sous-Jeff went with the salami, basil pesto, sundried tomato and scarmoza (like a mozarella cheese) melt. It was bloody delicious, and I wish I’d gone with that too! That said, I question it’s value for money at $9.50…

I went with a toasted sanga (yes, that’s what it is called on the menu!) of tomato, basil pesto, scarmoza and spinach. The bread was amazing after being toasted, but unfortunately a bit bland and lacking in seasoning, and not really sure i was worth $8.00.

All in all, great homely food, nice, chilled out atmosphere, just not sure I’d be willing to pay that much for a sanga again.

Would rate it 5 out of 10.

A little bit more wondering after that… oooohh, a pigeon!

And in the meandering and pigeon watching, stumble onto a new cupcake store that we hadn’t encountered before! Exciting times! Now, keep in mind that so far today we had already had cupcakes from Little Cupcakes, and a bloody amazing Peanut Butter Smash cupcake from Cupcake Central. We were expecting good things, especially when this is what we saw in the windows.

I didn’t get a photo as Sous-Jeff’s curiosity got the better of him and he beat me to it, but he ordered a lovely looking chocolate cupcakes with yellowish, honeycomb frosting, topped with half a Crunchie. I’ve gotta be honest – after cupcakes with Little Cupcakes and Cupcake Central, this was incredibly disappointing. Dry and relatively tasteless chocolate cake, couldn’t quite be saved by the frosting. Bit of a let down :( Points for the frosting, which was pretty good and smooth, and the presentation of the other cakes in the store.

Would rate it 3 out of 10.

In between the food, we made a few stops for drinks, including a stop into the Mitre Tavern, which we’ve been to and loved before, and finished up at another favourite of ours, for both the food and drinks, Hofbrauhaus.  Yup, just how we roll on a Saturday afternoon…

Chocolate Raspberry Cookies

28 Jul

Multicultural Inspiration from…

the world of baking!

Exciting times: my sister in-law and her partner are moving into their new house this weekend! So, of course, house warming cookies were in order. Only problem was that I’d just done the groceries and forgot to buy chocolate chips or anything like that. So the hunt began, the opening every cupboard in the house to see if I had any ingredients that were remotely cookie-inspiring. This caught my eye….

Unfortunately, I couldn’t see actual raspberry drops ending real well in a cookie, but it did make me think of the frozen raspberries I had in the freezer…. and I left the rest to my imagination! Here’s roughly what went down…

  • 220g butter, microwaved for 30 seconds
  • 90g caster sugar
  • 50g brown sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup frozen raspberries, microwaved for 30 seconds
  • 1 heaped tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 cup plain flour

Ok, so first up I mixed the butter and sugars in a large bowl with a wooden spoon, mashing it into a paste.

Then I threw in the egg yolk and vanilla extract and beat with electric mixer until everything was completely combined and blended together.

Next, in went the raspberries, and beat again and until completely combined, and it looks a little something like this:

After that, I just sifted in the cocoa and flour, rolled into balls, onto a tray and baked for 12 minutes on 190°C!

So, some of them came out a little bit, well, yeah…

But, thank goodness, most of them came out looking pretty good! Adjustments I’d make would be a little less butter and a little more flour, but other than that I was really happy with the taste – they had the chocolate hit with the bite of the raspberries, and were actually really good (or at least Kitchen Bug and I thought so)! They were a nice, soft cookie too, and I think next time I’d let them bake another 2 or 3 minutes to get a bit of crunch on the outside.

Over to you all… what seemed like a good idea at the time and either didn’t work out, or went surprisingly well?!

This was my second trip to Cafe Greco, and I still maintain it’s the best lamb I’ve had anywhere, ever. There are some pretty nasty reviews on Urban Spoon, which had Sous Jeff a little concerned when I suggested it as a pre-movie dinner.

We arrived on a Saturday night, to find the restaurant pretty busy. We’d luckily made a reservation and were seated quickly by the very attentive staff on the floor. Despite reviews suggesting that the service wasn’t quite up to scratch, we found them to be very quick and efficient.

We were in a bit of a hurry to get to our movie in time, so entrees were the bruschetta and the spanakopita. I thought the spanakopita was great value for money, but the bruschetta (delicious) was a bit sad with only 3 pieces arriving at our table.

As for mains, it was the same thing as last time, and the same thing as I’ll order next time; the lamb gyros. The most incredibly tender, flavourful lamb I have ever eaten, with the delicious little charcoaled, crispy bits that you can only get from the spit roasting that’s done right there in the restaurant for everyone to see. The pita bread was soft and fresh, and the tzatziki was full off dill and the absolute perfect accompaniment to the lamb.

It was definitely a touch over priced (2 mains, 2 entrees, 2 beers and a wine at just under $100), but the food was fantastic and we were pretty happy with everything! I’m sure some people have had bad experiences there – not everyone is going to have the same experience or enjoy the same things or have the same expectations, but we had a great feed and wouldn’t hesitate in going back again!

Would rate it 6.5 out of 10.

Ahhh sweet freedom!!! FINALLY out of the house after my operation (have been going positively stir crazy at home!), and out to Brunswick St, my favourite place in Melbourne, to have lunch with my mum and sisters. It’s always relaxing, almost therapeutic for me being there, amongst the second hand book stores, the vintage finds, the colourful street art and beautiful old buildings.

As for this review, it isn’t exactly a new restaurant. It’s not a hidden gem, and it’s not something new for me. It’s the Vegie Bar, a Fitzroy institution. I’ve been before, numerous times, having gone to university in the area, so this is really a shout out to a fantastic little place that has been around for as long as I remember, and continuously serves up amazing food to a loyal customer base. As soon as you walk in, you can feel a different vibe it’s busy, but laid back at the same time, noisy, but you can be in your own little world. And the food is utterly incredible.

I went with the living stack, a light, refreshing salad with a portobello mushroom, zucchini, tomato and fresh salsa stack, kale chips, and the most delicious, creamy ricotta pesto.

Mum went with the Little Macadamia Salad – green beans, roast pumpkin, tomatoes, roasted macadamias and feta – delicious!

One sister ordered the enormous pile that is the Soba Noodle Salad – again, so fresh and delicious, the deep fried onion was amazing in this dish!

And the other sister went with the huge house salad, one massive pile of raw and cooked veg, with marinated tofu. Again, fantastic.

There were also serves of rice balls, roti bread and the most sinfully perfect flourless chocolate cake, but unfortunately they didn’t make it long enough to get their pictures taken! None of us are vegetarians or vegans, but we all love the food there. Why? It’s fresh, delicious, wonderful food combinations, and constantly changing. I have been going back for years, and will continue to return for years to come.

Would rate it 9 out of 10.
